I propose a system to allow the community to contribute custom 3D models for made in 3D Studio Max, Maya, Lightwave, etc. for use as icons. For example, a globed/fox for Firefox, paintbrush for Photoshop, typewriter for Word, or just simple shape's or 3D versions of logos. This could include sources such as Google's 3D Warehouse.

But I insist the 3D icons stick to the actual 2D icons' theme.

Yeah, it could be easier than you think. If you see that the piles & other icons are in fact 3D-boxes. so if its possible 2 create cubes in it, it shouldn't be that hard 2 make other primitives like spheres, cones and the likes. and since we can make custom icons, we could make our own 3D-icons! :)

Hmmm. I like your idea, but here's my output. It'd be a little odd to stack, say a computer, between two files in a pile. So why not have the ability to have the items 3D by themselves and have them revert back to the basic shapes when grouping them or what not. In adding this in, you could kill two birds with one stone by allowing the community to have things like decorations while making them usable as icons and still be able to interface with the BumpTop layout. Just my two cents.

just summarizing what Zephraph said; When the icon is by itself, it would be 3D, say, a computer or a file cabinet. Whet you put it in a stact, it become a flat, 2D icon again. I completely agree with this idea. it would also be nive i incorporate this into the bumptop themes.
